Nvidia Provides Windows 7 Users with Security Updates Until September 2024

Chip manufacturer Nvidia will continue to provide security updates to owners of a GeForce video card that are still on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 until September 2024. New features, bug fixes and performance improvements will no longer be available from August 31 this year. Nvidia has announced this in a support document .

"Microsoft has officially ended support for Windows 7 and Windows 8, with Windows 8.1 approaching the end of its lifecycle. The majority of our GeForce customers have switched to Windows 10," the chip manufacturer said. According to figures from game platform Steam , four percent of gamers still use the three older operating systems.

Windows 7 will no longer receive security updates since January 14, 2020, unless organizations have signed an extended maintenance contract with Microsoft. Windows 8 support already ended on January 12, 2016. The last security updates for Windows 8.1 are scheduled for Tuesday, January 10, 2023.

Reason for Nvidia to also adjust the support for these platforms. The last "Game Ready Driver" will be released on August 31 this year. After that, the chip manufacturer will only roll out critical security updates. Vulnerabilities have been discovered in Nvidia's drivers and software several times in recent years . In most cases, these are vulnerabilities that allow an attacker who already has access to the system to increase his privileges.
