Microsoft provides more details on Windows 11 lifecycle and update policies

Microsoft has provided more details about the Windows 11 lifecycle and update policy. The new Windows version will be released in the second half of this year. Where Windows 10 receives a feature update twice a year, that will be the case with Windows 11 once.

Feature updates for Windows 11 Home and Pro will receive two years of security updates from Microsoft versus three years for Windows 11 Enterprise and Education. With Windows 10, this is the case for 18 months for the Home and Pro editions and 30 months for the Enterprise and Education editions respectively. Microsoft states that it has opted for an annual update cadence and slightly longer life cycle for Windows 11 based on user feedback.

The upgrade to Windows 11 will be free for Windows 10 users and must be initiated by the user. The condition is that the system meets the system requirements of the new Windows version. Windows 10 Home and Pro will receive security updates from Microsoft until October 14, 2025.
