McAfee antivirus company founder John McAfee dies at 75yrs

McAfee anti-virus company founder John McAfee has died aged 75. According to the Catalan authorities, McAfee, who had been held in a Spanish cell since late last year, took his own life, the AP news agency reported. The American authorities had asked Spain for his extradition. According to the US prosecutor in US, McAfee was guilty of tax evasion.

At the request of the US, McAfee was arrested in Spain last October. He has been in jail ever since, awaiting extradition. Hours after a Spanish judge ruled that McAfee could be extradited to the US, he was found dead in his cell yesterday. McAfee started McAfee Associates in 1987 and launched the first version of the antivirus software VirusScan at the end of that year.

In late 2012, he was wanted by police in Guatemala in connection with the murder of his neighbour. Four years later, the documentary Gringo about McAfee's life was released in which he was accused of rape and involvement in two murders. Since then, he has been involved in promoting cryptocurrencies, among other things, from which he earned millions of dollars, according to the prosecutor. In 2019, McAfee announced that he was on the run from US authorities over tax-related charges. He was finally arrested in Spain in October last year.
