US Declares Regional Emergency After Pipeline Ransomware Attack

The U.S. Department of Transportation has declared a regional emergency following a ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline Company's fuel pipeline in 18 states . Due to a ransomware attack, the company decided to shut down all kinds of systems, so that fuel is no longer transported through the pipeline network.

Colonial Pipeline is responsible for 45 percent of the US East Coast's fuel supply. With the declaration of a state of emergency, drivers transporting fuel can now work longer or more flexible hours. An oil market analyst tells the BBC that a lot of fuel is waiting at refineries in Texas to be transported. The driver exception will remain in effect until June 8 or until the state of emergency is over.
