Legal question: As a freelance programmer I get all kinds of questions, but this is the craziest one: a man wants me to make software to cheat an undisclosed game unobtrusively. He had read that I have certain knowledge with which this should indeed go a long way, and he is willing to pay well for it. But, apart from the ethical aspect, is this allowed at all? The game's EULA, of course, states in cow letters that cheating is prohibited. Am I punishable if I help him?

Answer: You are not punishable in the sense that the police come to arrest you and you can be fined or imprisoned. That is a difference with, for example, explaining to someone how to make bombs or supply scripts for computer hacking. This is punishable, so that you, as the maker of precursors, are regarded as an accomplice (providing opportunities, resources, information, etc.). Cheating in a game is not punishable, so it is not helpful either.

Since you have not accepted the EULA, the game provider cannot impose a fine on you or ban you from the game - you are also not in the game, so the rules of the game do not affect you.

You may run into copyright issues if creating your cheating software requires modifying the existing software. You may reverse engineer a protocol and write your own client or server for it, but not reverse engineer and clone the client in modified form.

My feeling would be not to respond to this. Not so much because of the risk of claims, but mainly because of that ethical aspect. And the fuss that surrounds it. Will someone who explicitly want to cheat actually pay? Is it fair about your share if problems arise? I wouldn't want a customer like that
